01

Design around use

List the actual activities the yard should support: cooking, dining, lounging, kids, pets, fire, shade or entertaining.

02

Map circulation

Doors, gates, walkways and gathering areas should connect naturally. Awkward circulation is difficult to fix after hardscape is installed.

03

Coordinate grade and drainage

Exterior surfaces and structures interact with water movement. Drainage and site conditions should be considered before finish patterns and landscape details.

04

Extend the design language

Materials, lines and proportions can reference the architecture of the home so the outdoor environment feels connected rather than appended.
